The UCLA and Orthopaedic Hospital Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is dedicated to
education, scholarship and patient service in the broad disciplines of adult
reconstruction, joint replacement, sports medicine, spine, foot & ankle,
pediatrics, oncology, hand surgery, and trauma.
Laboratories for biology, molecular biology, biomechanics,
and clinical evaluations area present in the various facilities on the UCLA
Campus, including the
UCLA
Center
for
Health
Sciences
Building
, the
MacDonald
Medical
Research
Building
, and the
Rehabilitation
Building. Excellent facilities are available
for clinical care, including the UCLA Orthopaedic and
Osteoporosis
Center
at the
UCLA
Medical
Plaza. Radiology facilities are
conveniently located adjacent to the
Orthopaedic
Center.
The majority of the educational and clinical activities take place at
UCLA
Center
for the Health Sciences, however, the Department maintains active training
programs at affiliated institutions in the
Los Angeles
metropolitan area. The
Los Angeles
Shriners
Hospital
is an important part of the UCLA program in that it provides concentrated
training in the area of pediatric orthopaedics.
Four active members of the clinical faculty supervise the residents in
the operating room and at ongoing clinics. During
the six-month rotation, each of the residents is expected to complete a clinical
research project in addition to their patient care responsibilities.
The West Los Angeles VA Medical Center provides clinical experience in
adult reconstructive surgery, spine, sports, hand surgery, trauma, and general
orthopaedics. The
Harbor-UCLA
Medical
Center
is the site of a free standing residency program in which UCLA rotates a senior
resident to serve as the Chief on one of the trauma services.
Orthopaedic Surgery faculty cover the hand service at UCLA/Olive View
Medical Center. Finally, UCLA and
Orthopaedic
Hospital
have formed a Strategic Alliance under which
Orthopaedic
Hospital
will be integrated with UCLA when the replacement facility for UCLA/Santa
Monica Medical Center is completed in 2006.
UCLA residents currently rotate to
Orthopaedic
Hospital
and there is a collaboration on several research initiatives between basic
scientists at UCLA and
Orthopaedic
Hospital
.
